Some Games to Play

3's

Using five dice, each player has up to five rolls of the dice, but must set at least one aside after each throw. Once a dice is set aside, it may not be rolled again. Goal is lowest score.

The best possible score after all the dice have been set aside is 0 (3-3-3-3-3).

In the event of tied scores, players play again.

The winner rolls first in the next game.

Ship, Captain, Crew

The objective of Ship, Captain, and Crew is pretty simple:

Get a ship, a captain, and a crew by rolling a 6, 5, and 4 respectively. The two dice which remain are your cargo, and the player with the most cargo (the highest score from the two dice) wins the round.
You only get three rolls. You first need your ship (6), captain (5), and crew (4), in order, before the remaining two dice can be counted for your score. If you don’t get the 6, 5, 4 at all, your score is zero.

Three roll poker

Each player may roll the five dice up to three times, trying to roll the best poker hand they can. On any of the three rolls the player may set aside one or more of the dice, though they are never required to. The current player may choose to end his turn after the first or second roll if they like their hand.
If, at the end of the round, two or more players are tied to win, then those players should roll their turns again until a clear winner is established.
The dice hands rank as follows (from highest to lowest):
Five of a kind
Four of a kind
Full house (Three of a kind and a pair)
Three of a kind
Two pair
One pair

Note: Straights do not count, and since there are no suits, there can be no flush.

1 - 4 - 18

Goal: With five dice and five rolls, obtain a 1 and a 4 and get the highest score possible with the other three dice. Highest score you can get is 18. (three 6’s. The 1 and 4 are zero).

Play: Five dice and at least two players. You have up to five rolls. After each roll you have to keep at least one die per roll, but you can keep as many as you like. Once a dice is kept, you can no longer roll it. Roll again until you have kept all five dice or you have run out of your five rolls.

A player must keep a 1 and a 4 during their rolls or else they are disqualified. The remaining dice are totaled, the maximum score is 18. (the 1 and 4 are zero). The player with the highest score, wins.

Example: 1st roll you get a 1, 6, 2, 2, 5 – Recommend keeping the 1 since you need it to qualify, and the 6 since its the highest you can get. Since you kept two dice, you only have three more rolls. (Number of dice left). 2nd roll you get a 4, 5, 2 – keep the 4 as you need it to qualify. Can keep the five or try your luck with your last two rolls. Roll again based on how many dice you have left and total your score.

Wilds!

We will play 3’s or Three Roll Poker using Wilds to mix things up.

3’s Wild – Typically this game is played where 3’s are worth zero and you play to the lowest score. Can change this up to play where 3’s are zero and 2’s (or any other dice you pick) is worth 10, and still try to get the lowest score.  Can also play with the goal of highest score where 3’s are 10 and 6’s are zero.

Three Roll Poker Wild – Play the usual way described above but make one die a wild. Can use that die as face value or to your choosing to help you get the better hand. For example: 4’s are wild. You roll and your final hand is 5, 5, 5, 4, 2. You would have four 5’s, as you could use your wild 4 as a 5. Or you roll a final hand of 2, 3, 4, 4, 4. Can turn that into four 3’s or you would make it a straight using your wild 4’s: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Have fun!

To Our Followers!

We met each other in Phoenix, Arizona and connected quickly over our love for traveling, checking out new places with great food, drinks, and atmosphere. We both have families who enjoy game nights and friendly competition, and we incorporated some dice games with our date nights. We started taking the dice everywhere with us coming up with new games and different versions of dice games we already enjoyed. While we had our ‘regular’ sushi and karaoke spots we would hit weekly, we developed a long list of places we have never been and started checking those spots off the list. While we are out enjoying these spots we often get asked about the dice, how to play and have people join in. It has been something we really look forward to and a great way to meet new people. . That grew into something fun that we can share with others. We created a Traveling Dice blog for our friends and family to follow along on our trips, tips for great restaurants, hidden spots, good food and drink recommendations. We started making little bags of dice with games to play that we carry with us, to share with others we meet. We encourage people to put your phones down and be present, enjoy each other. If you play, take pics and share them on The Traveling Dice pages, or tag us in your posts #thetravelingdice.

Hope you enjoy!
